Running records and daily observations provide information which help teachers to infer the reading behaviour students’ use, attempt and neglect. These data inform teaching judgments.

Students must know how to use what they know, in addition to any information suggested, implied or alluded to by the author or designer of the text, in order to know or understand something which has not been directly stated.

Targeted lessons around capitalisation, punctuation, spelling, grammar or paragraphing build knowledge of conventions. Handwriting may also be addressed in hand written texts.

Teachers usually select texts which are more difficult than those students are able to read and comprehend independently. By selecting challenging texts, teachers have more scope to lift the reading behaviour. Increased challenges in the text also provide more opportunities for teachers to highlight problem solving activity.

Well done! That’s the end of the learning reflection for part 3
