The orientation helps students to warm up or mentally prepare for the reading to follow.

Setting a purpose provides a rationale for the learning and highlights specific problem solving actions which are relevant to the reading to follow.

The three steps are:

  • activating prior knowledge,
  • making predictions,
  • building story or content knowledge.

Discussions should keep students’ attention focussed on and relevant to the text, enabling the adult to highlight important aspects of the text or problem solving actions.
