Part 6: Reflection, FAQ & Summing Up

Course progress

Welcome back. If you’ve worked on aspects of Part 5 ‘Clarifying and discussing the text’ you may have noticed:

  • overall improvement in active involvement (if you haven’t, don’t give up; make it clear that you expect students to clarify and if they don’t, ask them. E.g. I’m not sure what thermal imaging technology is. Can anyone explain?)
  • improved self-monitoring by students
  • improved meta language by students. That is, students become better at describing problem solving activity. E.g. Word solving: I sounded the first part, found a base word in the middle and added the ending. Then I blended it together to make it sound like ……(the word). E.g. Comprehension: I didn’t understand why she was so mad at him, so I reread the argument they had, and thought about it from her point of view.
  • a more authentic, conversational feel to the discussion begins to develop over time and with practice.

Professional reflection: What is the overall benefit to students of a rich, authentic discussion around the text?

Video summary: In ‘Reflection, FAQ and Summing Up’ (11:51) we look at

  • addressing the questions around implementing guided reading that are frequently asked.
