To observe the benefits of warming up before reading, do an experiment.
- Choose two guided reading texts on topics around which students have limited knowledge.
- Have one group start the reading cold. (That is, have them begin reading without activating prior knowledge or building content knowledge.)
- With the second group, start with a warm up.
- Activate prior knowledge and build story or content knowledge before reading.
- Note the differences in the word solving and comprehension levels.
That’s all for Part 3!
